What’s Cooking? Atlanta!

(ActionNews) Thick smoke settled over Atlanta Tuesday morning causing eyes to water and traffic to slow down.Winds from the southeast carried smoke from wildfires burning in South Georgia and North Florida. The smoke appeared almost like a London fog.”The winds are very light, trapping everything over the area,” said Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton.Drivers complained of scratchy throats caused by the gray pall. There is a code orange air quality warning in effect for the area. That means the air could be unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Mystech: Still hacking after stepping out of my door this morning. Between this, pollen and traffic smog, does Atlanta have the worst air quality aside from the planet Venus yet?

National Weather Service meteorologist Robert Beasley says the smoke from the big wildfire in the Okefenokee Swamp began showing up in Thomaston in Upson County, about 50 miles south of Atlanta, between 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. Smoke also is affecting Columbus in west Georgia. Beasley says the smoke is lowering visibility to three to five miles. He advises people with respiratory problems to stay inside. Beasley says the wind should swing to the east later today and pick up speed — clearing the smoke out of the metro area. He says a backdoor front moving through the area tomorrow should bring fresher air off the Atlantic and from the Carolinas. As Beasley puts it, “This morning should be the worst of it” as far as the smoke goes. The forecast calls for no rain for the next seven days. Beasley says an exception may be the mountain in extreme northeast Georgia, which may see a few thundershowers Wednesday.

    It’s trying to kill me!

I dropped off K at school this morning and decided to cancel the rest of my errands. Need to go look for the filter masks I put away somewhere!

I’m probably the lone person who found it kind of nice to have the woodsy fire smell and haze. It reminded me of many a night out in the woods, which was very relaxing.

Speaking as someone who loves the outdoors and campfires, I’d normally agree with you, but the literal atmospheric “soup” that hung over Peachtree Road this morning was stifling.

I like a good campfire, but the added aroma of vehicle exhaust sort of took the romance out of it. 🙁

A little bit of wood smoke is a nice smell, but what we had in my area today had a lot more than just smoke in it. There was something sour I could taste in the air when I breathed, plus noticeable particles of something (pollen & dust?) and definitely car exhaust too.

Wow. After weeks of having the smoke here in Orlando you guys are getting it. Weird.

  6. Mystech says:

Probably something to do with the change of winds. Even still, I’m pretty amazed the smoke made it here in such large quantities.

Yeah. When I first saw it here I thought that the city was on fire right near my apartment. When I drove across town, it was still as thick as it was at my place. I thought the world was ending.
