The Rule of 20: My Personal Pedestrian Guidelines

Even before I lived in a city that was decidedly “parking-hostile” I had started trying to walk everywhere within reason rather than walk. This primarily consisted of Work, Groceries, Coffee Shop and other reasonable errands.  I’d never codified the way I chose whether to walk or drive, but here goes.

I’m callling it the Rule of 20:

  • If it’s within 20 blocks, walk
  • If I’m carrying less than 20 lbs, walk
  • If it’s above 20 degrees F, walk

Yeah, Pal, wait until you get to sixty and see if that rule of twenty still applies.

    Warmer than 50-play golf
    Less than 2 miles-walk

I know plenty of 60+ people capable of this effort. It all depends on what we ask of our bodies and how we treat them.
