I’m still of very mixed opinion about dogs on trails, but my sister and brother-in-law often take their dog, Max, along with them with apparent success. In any case, they’ve decided that Max needs to start carrying his own weight, so he is now the proud owner of his own backpack.
For the gear conscious [...]

The day after the birds discovered the feeder, I discovered just how messy birds are when it comes to eating. They regularly hurl seeds away to find their favorites (like children picking between vegetables). Deft beaks make short work of shells allowing them to shower down to the ground. Some of this [...]

Time for another selection off the slowly shortening list of “classics”. I’m thinking one of the following:
War and Peace
To Kill a Mockingbird
Les Miserables
Why? Because I have them on hand. :-)

Not sure why, but the storm we had this afternoon hit my patio particularly hard. The plants took a bit of a battering, but I’m hoping they’ll bounce back. The one exception is the Squash plant which presented two more blossoms (for a total of three) in response to the pummeling.

If I was looking for a pick-me-up after the likes of The Sound and The Fury and Crime and Punishment, Madame Bovary was not it. The novel is definitive Realism, polishing no edges and pulling no blows. I kept finding myself checking the original publication date and wondering how it didn’t start a [...]

I returned to Atlanta yesterday from Savage Gulf Canyon in Tennessee (having not been eaten by bears). For those not familiar with SGC, it is part of the South Cumberland Recreational Area about 70 miles northwest of Chattanooga, TN. A few years ago, I went on a three day hike and covered a challenging [...]

Among the Avian Mafia that visits my feeder is an elusively swift Carolina Chickadee. I haven’t been able to capture a photo of him, but here is a stock image from Wikipedia for reference. At about half the size and weight of his neighbors, he makes even the small finches look large in comparison. [...]

Bush Compares Obama to Nazi Sympathizer
(Huffington Post) President Bush has said repeatedly that he would not insert himself into the presidential race, but that stance changed dramatically today during his trip to Israel. After likening Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Osama bin Laden, Bush compared Barack Obama to Nazi appeasers:
“Some seem to believe we [...]
