While Down and Out has numerous great, though provoking ideas about future technology and cultural impacts, they are mired in a relatively mediocre story. You can really tell it was his first novel. The story meanders around in a muddled manner, not really knowing where it wants to go, let alone how to get there. I’d advise readers to skip it and instead go straight to Little Brother.
