Hughes lays Athens bare, from its lofty visionary ideals to its brutal and shocking realities. You won’t find the curtain pulled across any aspect of the culture. She has a real gift for laying everything out in front of you without criticism, malice OR romanticism. A welcome talent in modern history “documentaries” that gloss and pander.
