War of the Worlds Musical

Filed under dimly recalled memories… Last night I caught a snippet of a History Channel special on Martians or War of the Worlds. In the part I caught, they mentioned a musical version of War of the Worlds and for some reason it triggered an old memory in my head, I knew I had heard this before. I had the barest recollection of an ironclad naval dreadnought and a desperate struggle against our Martian invaders. Anyhow, I was sufficiently impressed by the emergence of the memory to track down the album in question.

Cover.jpg(Wikipedia) Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds was a 1978 concept album by Jeff Wayne and others, retelling the story of The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells. The War of the Worlds starred Richard Burton as the narrator-protagonist, Justin Hayward (of The Moody Blues), and David Essex. “Forever Autumn“, “Thunder Child“, and “The Spirit of Man” were some of the individual songs. “Forever Autumn” also became a separate radio hit for a time. Most of the lyrics to the songs were written by former Elton John lyricist Gary Osborne.

I love that album. šŸ™‚ Along with Brian de Palma’s “Phantom of the Paradise” which is also a pretty good listen.

Never heard of it, but I’ll take a look. I’m in a very peculiar, some might say deranged, musical mood today. šŸ™‚

omg YES! That album totally rocks. I first heard it when I was but a child… I have it in my collection now and occasionally give it a play.

Creepy as hell on Halloween. šŸ™‚

Oddly enough, I also now I have the aching desire to run a pseudo-Victorian, SteamPunk-esque larp with Martians (so myself and the eight other fans of the genre in Georgia have something to do). šŸ™‚
