Holiday Hiking Plans

chatt-source.gifWell, folks are gearing up for King’s Gate and the Fourth of July but I’m not particularly in the mood for cook-outs and pyrotechnics. I’ve decided instead to go hiking for the weekend. The current plan is to knock out another section of the Appalachian Trail; Hogpen Gap to Unicoi Gap. While I’m in the area, I think I’ll make a side trip the source spring of the Chattahoochee River. I know it’s probably not much to look at, hardly the source of the Nile or anything, but I’m intrigued by seeing the “highest and most northerly contributor” of this waterway. Together, this amounts to a two day hike and ~30 miles roundtrip so. Maybe start at Neel’s Gap instead (~40 miles round trip; 3 days)?

Sounds like a plan. Hey, even the Mississippi starts as a creek and there is something vaguely mystical (or entirely mystical depending on your slant) to springs and water sources. Have a lovely trip.
